Turn off all electronic devices when they are not in
use. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent
light bulbs which use 60 % less energy and turn off
unnecessary lights.
Install a set-back thermostat in your home. Program
it to the minimum acceptable temperature for when no
one is home and when you are asleep. Set the at-home,
daytime temperature a few degrees lower than you have
in the past. Become accustomed to wearing an extra layer
in winter and keep a blanket on the couch. In summer,
close curtains to keep sunlight and heat out during
the hottest part of the day. Open windows to let cooler
air inside from dusk to dawn.
Install a low-flow showerhead. Take shorter and cooler
showers. Fix leaky faucets and don't use unnecessary
water.
Replace furnace filters regularly and get an energy
audit.
Dry your clothes on a rack or clothesline instead of
using the dryer whenever possible. Wait to use your washer,
dryer and dishwasher until you have a full load.
Whenever you make new purchases for your home, choose
products that have a low-environmental impact such as
Energy Star appliances. Even a switch to biodegradable
dish soap can make a big difference.
Buy local. Find out where the nearest Food Coop is
and patronize them instead of the big chain stores.
Visit the local farmer's market for fresh local fruits
and vegetables.
Make environmentally smart choices at the supermarket.
Avoid items with too much packaging. Buy organic foods
and fair trade goods whenever possible. Say "Neither!"
when asked if you want paper or plastic and hand the
clerk your own reusable cloth shopping bags.
Reduce the amount of the Earth's resources that we
use. Reuse rather than replacing items, and if you are
not going to use them again give them to someone who
will. Recycle by placing items in your recycling bins,
turning used items into something new or donating it
so that someone else may use it.
Whenever possible buy recycled products.
Plant trees.
Drive a fuel-efficient vehicle and reduce the number
of miles you put on your car. Take a walk, ride your
bike, car-pool or take public transportation.
